Breast cancer in dogs

We understand this is a difficult time and we are here to support you and your pet by providing the options and care necessary. Selecting a therapy is not binding and can be adjusted to you and your pet’s needs. During treatment sessions, you will be provided with updates and any recommendations depending on your pet’s response.

Your vet may ask you to bring your dog to follow-up appointments so they can check them over for new tumours and any regrowth from the removed tumour/s.

In our study, clinical response had not been seen in 3/3 dogs treated with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide protocols and all 3 dogs had died within 1 mo of presentation. Aggressive chemotherapy with bone marrow ablation followed by bone marrow autotransplantation improves survival time in women with IMC (18,19). The use of chemotherapy in dogs with IMC has not been described, but, in a recent study, the use of either doxorubicin or docetaxel after surgery in dogs with invasive malignant mammary gland tumors was evaluated and no significant difference was seen in dogs that received adjuvant chemotherapy versus surgery alone, although there was a tendency toward higher long-term local control and survival rates in the dogs receiving chemotherapy; however, it is possible that the low patient numbers affected statistical significance in that study (21). In women with locally advanced breast cancer, which mimics many of the features of IMC, the combination of the prodrug capecitabine and taxanes provided improved survival times when compared with times in studies that had used doxorubicin-based protocols (22). Although combinations of doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, and 5-fluorouracil have been reported to be effective against inflammatory breast cancer in women, the same may not be true in dogs. Evaluation of different drug combinations are warranted (23).

Radiation therapy (RT) has not been investigated for the treatment of mammary tumors in dogs, despite playing a big role in the treatment of this disease in people. Possible uses include pre-operative irradiation of large tumors, post-operative irradiation of incompletely resected tumors, or palliative irradiation of inoperable tumors. Dogs with inflammatory mammary carcinoma may benefit from radiation therapy.

Malignant mammary tumors typically spread through the lymphatic vessels. Metastasis from the first, second, and third mammary glands is to the ipsilateral axillary or anterior sternal lymph nodes. The fourth and fifth mammary glands drain to the superficial inguinal lymph nodes where metastasis can be found. Many mammary carcinomas will eventually metastasize to the lungs.

Your dog’s symptoms will vary depending on what stage their mammary cancer is at.

Canine patients with inflammatory mammary carcinoma have the poorest survival rates among mammary tumor patients. Mean survival rate for 20 dogs receiving palliative treatment (antibiotics and prednisone) for IMC was 25 d (range 4 to 55 d), in contrast with a mean survival time of 14.2 mo with surgical treatment alone for dogs with non-IMC malignant mammary tumors (2,5). Because of the extremely invasive nature and, consequently, poor prognosis with IMC, surgery is not usually recommended for treatment (3).

There is considerable evidence for the importance of hormonal influence in both CMT and HBC. However, when evaluating shared hormonal etiology, it is important to remember that dogs do not undergo menopause; therefore, considerations should be made for premenopausal women who undergo cyclic hormonal changes similar to the dog. 107 In both humans and dogs, males are rarely affected. In terms of CMT risk, reproductively intact female dogs have a fourfold higher risk compared to dogs ovariohysterectomized (spayed) before the age of two. 108

Surgery is the best option for your dog. The earlier the tumour is removed, the better.

Wide surgical resection is recommended for malignant mammary masses. Benign tumors require less aggressive surgical margins. Surgery is the only treatment required for benign tumors and some malignant tumors. Dogs with large tumors, high-grade tumors, tumors that have already spread, and certain histological types are at higher risk for regrowth and spread following surgery. Multiple tumors can be removed at the same time. Each tumor should be submitted for biopsy because they can all be different.
