Deer flies, sometimes grouped with horseflies or moose flies, are small flying insects with painful bites found all over the world. This kind of fly is persistent and leaves behind annoying, itchy bites that linger.

Black flies are small, hump-backed, and dark-colored. These insects are sometimes called buffalo gnats and are very common in the United States. Although they bite, black flies do not transmit diseases, at least not in the United States.

No matter the type of fly, fly bites can be annoying but usually resolve with time. You can typically treat fly bites at home with topical medicines or oral antihistamines. Some people may contract a disease from the saliva or develop an allergic reaction, often requiring a visit to a healthcare provider or, in rare cases, a trip to the emergency room.

What does a fly bite look like? Symptoms often vary, depending on the type of fly, but usually include pain, itching, swelling, and redness. For example, a yellow fly bite typically results in an itchy, large welt. Other types of flies include brown flies (e.g., deer and sand flies), horse flies, and stable flies.
