If you think someone in your family has been bitten by a bedbug, wash the bites with soap and water. Calamine lotion, an anti-itch cream, or cool compresses can help with the itching. In some cases, an antihistamine by mouth can ease itching. Bites clear up in 1–2 weeks.

Bedbug Bite

To know it’s bedbugs, it’s important to find the bugs themselves. Look at bedsheets and mattresses for little spots of blood, rusty-looking stains (crushed bugs), or black dots (bugs’ poop). You might see live bugs around the seams or tags of mattresses and box springs, or in cracks of bed frames and other furniture. They can even hide in books, carpet edges, and electrical outlets.

Bedbugs are small insects whose food source is the blood of humans and other mammals. Bedbugs tend to live in places such as mattresses, cracks in walls, upholstered furniture, and rugs, and they come out during the night to feed. Their bite is painless, so your baby will likely not wake up when bitten, but the bite produces a very itchy rash. Your baby will wake up with itchy papules (small, solid bumps), usually in lines or clusters. The bite itself is harmless, and bedbugs are not known to spread blood-borne diseases, but babies and children are prone to scratching at bites, potentially causing secondary skin infections.

A person does not usually feel the actual bedbug bite. Afterward, the bite will feel itchy. Bedbug bites look like little red bumps (similar to mosquito bites) and they can sometimes happen in a line on the body. The bites are mainly on areas of skin that are exposed while sleeping.

Bedbug bites can look similar to other bug bites, like mosquito bites or chigger bites.

They come out at night to find food, feeding on human and animal blood. After their blood meal, bedbugs don’t stay on a person or animal for long. Instead, they hide nearby, often in clothing or luggage, allowing them to spread when belongings move to another location.

Your child may need a prescription-strength topical steroid to help relieve intensely itchy bites. Children have an especially hard time refraining from scratching, especially at night. Because scratching may cause infection, look for signs of infection, such as pus, redness, swelling, or fever. If you see any of these signs or if there is blistering or an otherwise severe reaction, call your child’s medical provider. There have been rare cases of severe allergic reactions that have affected breathing (anaphylaxis); if this is the case in your child, it necessitates immediate emergency medical care.

Bedbugs are small (apple seed-sized) insects that feed on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded mammals. They live in dark, dry places such as mattresses, rugs, and upholstered furniture, and they come out during the night to feed by making small bites in their food source. The bite itself is painless, so children rarely wake up at the time of the bedbug bite, but the resulting bite leaves behind a substance in the skin that causes a very itchy rash in most people. The child will often awaken with a rash of scattered pink or red papules (small, solid bumps) or a welt. The bites themselves are not dangerous, but children can get skin infections if they scratch and break the skin.

If your home has bedbugs, call a professional exterminator. The exterminator can use chemical and non-chemical ways to get rid of the bedbugs. It takes time and patience, but bedbugs can be controlled.
