Seborrheic dermatitis is common: About 3 to 10 out of 100 people are affected. It’s more common in men than in women. People usually get it for the first time when they are young adults or over the age of 50.

People who are living with an HIV infection or some neurologic disorders including Parkinson’s disease (affects the brain’s ability to control movement) also have a higher risk of getting seborrheic dermatitis than people who do not have one of these conditions. In children and adults who have AIDS, seborrheic dermatitis can cover much of the body and be difficult to treat.

If you experience signs of anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) such as difficulty breathing, dizziness, or lightheadedness, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Contact dermatitis causes an itchy red rash that might include bumps and blisters. You may also have swelling, oozing, or dry skin.

Symptoms include a breast rash that might be painful, itchy, red, and shiny. You might have nipple irritation and—if you’re nursing—nipple pain that doesn’t end after you stop or change positions.

African Americans and those with skin of color might experience petaloid seborrheic dermatitis, a more severe form where lesions form around the hairline and skin discoloration happens. Usually, the discolored skin manifests in a ring-shaped rash.
