Ultrasound characterization of breast masses

My doctor found a lump in my breast during my yearly mammogram and then brought in an ultrasound technician to follow up with an ultrasound for a closer look. Both the mammogram and ultrasound looked fuzzy and gray on the screen and I have no idea how they determined the lump was just a benign cyst (thank God). What does breast cancer look like on a mammogram?

The pathologist looks at the size and shape of the cells, as well as their arrangement if the tissue sample was taken by using a core needle biopsy or stereotactic breast biopsy. That’s also true for an open biopsy done by making a cut through the skin to remove the sample.

Malignant lesion. A smooth margin and homogenous echotexture suggest a category 3 lesion. Color Doppler reveals irregularly branching neovascularity

Breast ultrasound can detect lumps that may not be seen on mammograms, and they can also note changes in the breasts in women with dense breast tissue. Ultrasound can tell the difference between solid masses that might be cancer versus fluid-filled cysts, which are generally not cancerous.

Infections in the breast can cause redness and swelling. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference between mastitis (inflammation of breast tissue) and inflammatory breast cancer, but mastitis often causes symptoms of fever, chills, and body aches. Those symptoms aren’t associated with cancer.

If you find a lump, contact your healthcare provider right away. Beyond a physical exam, the provider may use a mammogram, MRIs, and ultrasound to help with the diagnosis. A breast biopsy may be needed on the basis of these other findings. An early diagnosis is the best way to have a good outcome.

Breast cancer is among the most common causes of cancer deaths today, coming fifth after lung, stomach, liver and colon cancers. It is the most common cause of cancer death in women.[1] In 2005 alone, 519 000 deaths were recorded due to breast cancer.[1] This means that one in every 100 deaths worldwide and almost one in every 15 cancer deaths were due to breast cancer. Refinement of high-frequency technology, particularly with 7.5–13 MHz probes, has brought out a totally new facet in USG breast imaging.[2] For example:

Cancers often appear bright when looking at mammogram pictures. The area around the mass may be distorted. Breast calcifications (calcium deposits in the breast), especially when grouped in clusters, may be visible as well.

On a mammogram, benign tumors often appear round or oval ( ellipsoid ) with clear, well-defined edges.

A breast cancer ultrasound is a quick and completely painless procedure. Ahead of your breast ultrasound, make sure to have your referral letter from your doctor with you, along with any previous scan results that may be relevant. You will want to wear clothes that are easy to remove. Leave jewellery and valuables at home and avoid putting any lotions, creams or other products on the areas to be scanned.

Cancerous and benign masses may appear similar on a mammogram. However, some findings are more common in one than the other.
