To begin, you will be asked to remove your clothing from the waist up. The sonographer, the medical professional administering your breast ultrasound, will spread gel on the area/s to be scanned. They will then move a small device called a transducer over your breast and the lymph nodes in your armpit.

There are several other automated ultrasound imaging approaches. “Semi-automated” ultrasound uses the same smaller transducer as for handheld ultrasound, but the transducer is put in a motorized arm that moves across the breast in overlapping segments. In ultrasound “tomography,” the patient lies face down and lowers one breast at at time through an opening in a padded table into warm water. Each breast is then scanned by a ring-shaped transducer which moves up the breast.

A breast cancer ultrasound is a quick and completely painless procedure. Ahead of your breast ultrasound, make sure to have your referral letter from your doctor with you, along with any previous scan results that may be relevant. You will want to wear clothes that are easy to remove. Leave jewellery and valuables at home and avoid putting any lotions, creams or other products on the areas to be scanned.

Breast Ultrasound and How It Is Used To Fight Against Breast Cancer ...

Ultrasound of the Breast

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to form an image. The sound waves pass through the breast and bounce back or “echo” to form a picture of the internal structures of the breast. Only gentle pressure is applied to the breasts and ultrasound rarely causes any significant discomfort. There is no ionizing radiation and no intravenous injection of contrast. A water-soluble gel or lotion is placed on the skin of the breast. The handheld or automated transducer directs the sound waves to the breast tissue to create a picture that can be seen on a computer screen.

Fluid-filled cysts usually appear as solid black circles or ovals, while compared to cysts, breast cancers usually appear as slightly lighter irregular masses. It is important, however, not to try to interpret breast cancer ultrasound images on your own. Your healthcare professional is trained to know what to look for and will talk you through any next steps.

For some women at higher risk of developing breast cancer, the addition of MRI scanning is recommended as a screening tool. The American Cancer Society recommends that women at high risk for breast cancer (greater than 20% lifetime risk) receive an MRI and a mammogram every year. Women at moderately increased risk (15%-20% lifetime risk) should discuss the benefits and limitations of adding MRI screening with their health-care professional.

Breast self-examination (BSE) is an option for women starting in their 20s. Women should report any breast changes to their health-care professional.
If a woman wishes to do BSE, the technique should be reviewed with her health-care professional. The goal is to feel comfortable with the way the woman’s breasts feel and look and, therefore, the woman can detect changes in her breasts if they do not feel or look normal.

Women should discuss with their doctor about how often and when they should begin screening tests.

Because of these limitations of mammography in younger women, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that routine yearly screening mammography begin at age 50. Women aged 40 to 49 are encouraged to discuss their situation with their health-care practitioner to decide on the appropriate time to begin screening mammography.
